Charles Bukowski wrote about life. He wrote about drinking, dead-end jobs, women, sex, gambling, and violence. Much of his writing is crude because that's how he saw life. The Most Beautiful Woman in Town contains many semi-autobiographical stories and other stories with an interesting taste of fantasy and surrealism.I greatly enjoyed this book. It was the first Bukowski book I have read, and I honestly wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. What I discovered was an author who was real andA collection of short stories, many of them pure filth, some crossing the bounds of bad taste. Bukowski mainly writes about subjects close to his experience; drinking, lousy jobs, casual sex, drinking, cigars, racetrack betting, drinking. There are some fantasy pieces and some where the line between truth and fiction may be blurred. Sometimes barely coherent but always brutally honest and often bleakly funny. A unique voice, that's for sure.
I used to give this to every woman I dated.Naturally I've had limited success with the fairer sex.
I really wanted to like this book but it was just wrong. Like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas it's a book I should have read at 18 when I was impressed by such things. Now it's pointless and a bit disgusting. There are moments of something genuine and brilliant here and there but they are not worthy of getting through the rest of it.Also shouldn't have read it in Russian because profanity in English doesn't look that ugly to me but in Russian is very unpleasant. Or maybe the translations wasn't
Quite frankly, I have read better stuff on Wattpad. Bukowski might be a good poet; but he is a terrible, terrible writer. Not only do his stories in this collection lack depth and character, his writing is also sub-standard and way below mediocre. Not to mention, insufferably boring. The overt sexism, the misogyny, the sneering cynicism and his screaming-right-at-your-face elitism: Jesus, there's a limit to what my mind can ignore! Dark, twisted, morbid... I've never read anything else quite like it, and had a hard time putting it down. The stories in this book made me cringe, gasp, laugh and cry. This isn't for anyone who has a weak stomach or a closed mind. A fine collection of literature by a brilliant author and poet.
