La cantatrice chauve / La leçon = The Bald Soprano and The Lesson: Two Plays, Eugène IonescoLa Cantatrice Chauve — translated from French as The Bald Soprano or The Bald Prima Donna — is the first play written by Romanian-French playwright Eugène Ionesco. The play opens on Mrs. Smith reciting the events of the night with Mr. Smith. They discuss the death of someone they knew, Bobby Watson. The play then shifts back to reality and they realize that Bobby has been dead for four years. Suddenly they flash back to when he was alive and engaged to a woman who was also called Bobby Watson.

Funny, playful with language.While it's undeniably a French classic, and the two stars are in no way representative on what I think of it as art, or even an absurdist play, which it is (and does well). It's pretty personal, I think it's just unenjoyable. Much like how some people judge on merit and others on taste, I'd say it's a five stars in merit but just uninteresting to me on a personal level, which ultimately wins out. Much like the toilet by Duchamp. Love what he's saying, but I think it's just not very interesting,

They were really good, I loved THE LESSON, but I think I didn't get the second one. Why is it called THE BALD SOPRANO anyway? I read on the internet that he got the sentences out of a self-study English book. And there's one scene that the fire chief asks if they've seen the bald soprano. I don't know.
La Cantatrice Chauve was phenomenal and deserving of five stars. However, La Leçon was not quite as good and probably my least favorite of Ionesco's works. If you pick this book up I would advise just reading La Cantatrice Chauve and then moving on to another work by Ionesco (such as Les Chaises).
Theatre of the absurd at its best.
