Going to school as a child, we had to read this book, it is required reading here. I didn't remember the story though, but I really enjoyed reading it now as a grown up. The story is great with lots of adventure in it and you learn a lot of the history. It is written in a way that you want to keep reading because you want to know what will happen next. It gets 5 points because of how well it is written, and how I loved it.This book is in the 1001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Grow UpHow lovely it was to revisit a childhood story! I love history, but somehow it wasn't the class I got the best grades in. I think it's more the stories that interest me! Like Crusade in Jeans (or Kruistocht in spijkerbroek). The main character Dolf says at one point something along the way of that you get to know all about the rich "important" men of history, but not so much about the "normal" human. And those are who interest me the most actually! It was also a period in time I didn't get to

An absolutely stunning book. I am somewhat prejudiced, since i love this writer. But this story, about the childrens crusades scetches a very good picture of those days. I would also recommend it to adults. Its still an up to date story, about how adults take advantage of children and use them for their own gain. On the other hand± its a very adventurous story every child would enjoy reading. I can tell you enough± read this book, and the other from this writer.
After rather totally stalling and generally feeling mostly massively annoyed with the narrative flow of the anonymous English language translation of Thea Beckman's 1973 time travel novel Kruistocht in spijkerbroek (Crusade in Jeans) when I was trying to read the latter about nine or so years ago and became increasingly frustrated with and by how everything in the English rendition seems to feel distractingly distant and that the text also moves along at best awkwardly and very often feeling

This ended up being a very satisfying read. Im sure if Id read this at age 10, it would have been a 5 star book for me. I would have particularly enjoyed the episodic adventures of Dolf and the children when I was that age.I very quickly had to suspend my adult sensibilities major disbelief and try to put myself back to my 9 or 10 or 11 year old self, eager for a fantasy novel. Im not talking about the time travel aspect, but there is no way that scientists, let alone a father, would let happen
