Chronicle Toward Books The Touch

'Fast-moving and immensely readable ... a page turner from start to finish' - Maeve Binchy

Alexander Kinross is remembered in his native Scotland only as a shiftless boilermaker's apprentice. But when he writes from Australia to summon his bride, his relatives realize he is now a man to be reckoned with. Arriving in Sydney after a difficult voyage, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth Drummond meets her husband-to-be and discovers that he frightens and repels her. And, isolated in Alexander's great house, Elizabeth finds that marriage does not prompt her husband to enlighten her about his past life - nor his present one, in which his mistress, the sensuous, tough, outspoken Ruby Costevan, still plays a part...

Judge Epithetical Books The Touch
I very much liked the story and the characters, but it became so tiresome to be bashed over the head with how the Chinese were better than white people. Throughout the book, Chinese work harder, are better domestic servants, are more loyal, know more medical cures, and Chinese men have better legs than white men. (I wish I was making that last bit up.)The author spills so much ink proclaiming her admiration for Chinese, but not one character was Aboriginal. The native people of Australia do not

A really good storyI chose 5 stars for this book as I found it hard to put down. Historical fiction about the 1800s in Australia, the story is wrapped around the mining history of Australia. Great storyline and kept me interested until the end. My idea of a great story is when I've finished reading a book and wish it hadn't ended! A bit like missing an old friend.

The Touch was my first Colleen McCullough book, and once I read it I wanted to read more from her, and I did. However, although I enjoyed some of her other works, The Touch will always be my first love. Its an epic historical novel set during the Australian gold rush. Alexander Kinross sends off for a bride for himself, but when she arrives, their marriage is neither welcomed nor happy for either of them. His wife, Elizabeth, is only 16 years old, sullen and entirely introverted. Alex, himself,

This book focuses on the world around Alexander Kinross, a man who has done extremely well in mining and settled in NSW, Australia. He sends for a 16 year old bride who arrives from Scotland with little idea of what awaits. There are so many aspects I enjoyed about this book. I love the historical setting and learning more about my local area. I enjoyed the complex relationships that developed and the difficulties faced. I enjoyed the emotion throughout the novel and wide range of characters.

I actually liked this one a lot better than "Thornbirds." (Sorry, I just can't get behind Meggie and the much older priest.) I couldn't put this one down, even though I really dislike books that glorify extramarital affairs. I took it as a historical book that showed the laissez-faire attitude of Australia at the time.
